Governor Punjab Salman Taseer assassinated in Islamabad

The Governor of Punjab, Pakistan, Salman Taseer has been assassinated in Islamabad. Mr. Taseer, a senior member of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) was shot dead in a market popular with wealthy Pakistanis. He was taken to hospital where he succumbed to injuries.

According to initial information, he was shot 9 times on face, chest and stomach. He was attacked by a member of his security team. A member of Elite Force, Mumtaz Qadri (as announced by the interior minister) opened fire at him as he got out of his car in Islamabad. The assassin said that he had committed murder because Salman Taseer was involved in blasphemy of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAWW)
